who we are

elucido solitudo obscurum - to light the desert's darkness

Bioluminati is a theme camp at Burning Man. We are a small but merry group of people with mixed backgrounds; primarily in technology and the arts. We thrive by cooperative effort and bond around our fine cuisine and absurd art projects. Over 200 Burners have joined us at one time or another over the years, so far hailing from the United States, Canada, England, and Germany.

We have been an active camp since 1996. In the early years, we primarily focused on Bio-illumination. This involved many glowsticks, the common personal lighting at the time. With the advent of cheap EL-wire and LED lighting, many on the playa are now are well lit by themselves, so we have moved on…

The camp always has various interactive street-side art projects, video projections, and Riddle Quests involving all of Black Rock City.

In 2005, campers Nick and Tracy had an idea- offer to the city some form of bike decoration station. From this idea, Pimp Your Bike began, and made its debut at Burning Man 2006. It has evolved into a popular offering with growing success. All our campers are expected to contribute. We utilize donations of all manner of odd non-MOOP (Matter Out Of Place) making items - old xmas ornaments, paint, stickers, found objects, led lights and fabric - for fellow playa citizens to dress up their rides!

In 2007, camper Random started Micro-Cinema: a nightly projection of camper's and friend's video projects. These are interlaced with non-mainstream personal movie favorites, such as Star Wars, in Mandarin Chinese, with english subtitles; simply amazing translation.

Bioluminati, The non-Profit

As a tribute to post-millenium cooperative optimism, Bioluminati became a non-profit California corporation recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(7) tax exempt organization. Its purpose is to coordinate the camp infrastructure, transportation logistics, costs and management. We own a trailer that stores our physical infrastructure when we are not on the Playa. The Bioluminati Council (see below) manages the ongoing affairs of our little state of mind. In a nutshell, incorporation created a legal entity that can enter into contracts and hold property.

How we roll...

Get the bike pun?

Keep it simple.

One purpose of Burning Man is to explore new ways of living. It's just as important to choose what you bring to the playa as what you choose to leave behind in your daily western life.

Practice Self-reliance. Pay It Forwards into the Network.

image: %s Here we all look after ourselves, and each other. By contributing small essential pieces in the right places, the aggregate effect is awesome. The camp system team framework is designed to make this happen easily for each of us; but it only works when we each plug in.

System Plan: Two-Tiered Camp System

Camp Systems are the most important projects that go on in the camp. There are two tiers to the camp systems.

Tier One: Setup, Meals, Exodus

The first tier EVERYONE must participate in. And while there is no free ride in the desert, there is actually wonderful dessert in the desert (and usually some desert in the dessert for that matter.)

Tier Two: Camp Systems

The second tier is for all the major camp systems, organized into system teams. We have sign ups for each system and there is a lot of choice as to where/how/when YOU pitch in. Originally, we had only a Group Meals system. Now, join as many teams as you can enjoyably and effectively contribute to, but make sure to play seriously on at least one. The teams are there to organize and produce our camp, if no one plays, no camp! Inspire Yourself, Self-Organize, and Inspire Each Other!

During setup the entire camp "Ant Force" is there to manifest the group effect for tasks like raising the dome. Please create your own projects if inspired! Otherwise, just pitch in where we know from experience its needed.
